We’re heading into 2025, and it’s time to make some changes.
And by changes, I don’t mean New Year’s resolutions that sound great but ultimately fail.
Instead, I want you to envision 2025 as the year you unlock the full potential of your construction business,
Tear down what’s holding you back and focus on building up shareholder value.
Sound exciting?
Then let’s set demolition goals. Here’s how:
Step 1: Identify What Needs to Be Demolished
I recently met with a business owner, Jim, tied down by the same tasks:
-> Managing project details
-> Handling client issues
-> Solving daily operational problems.
These tasks are keeping Jim locked working in the business rather than on the business.
I asked Jim to be brutally honest about which tasks were keeping him stuck in this cycle.
Is it client calls? Weekly project management meetings? Firefighting staff issues?
The tasks that feel like a weight holding back his progress.
These are Demolition Goals - the things you’ll remove to give yourself the freedom to focus on growth.
Step 2: Turn Each Task into a Demolition Goal
For every task you’ve identified, create a Demolition Goal to remove it from your day-to-day operations.
Here’s what Jim agreed with me:
I’m always drawn into project details → My Demolition Goal is to remove myself from day-to-day project management.
I’m stuck in weekly financial reviews → My Demolition Goal is to reduce time reviewing financials.
I constantly deal with staff issues → My Demolition Goal is for staff to not approach me directly with issues.
Step 3: Plan Out the How for Each Goal
Once you’ve set your Demolition Goals, the next step is to design a strategy for removing these tasks from your plate.
Here’s how Jim approached his:
Not managing project details → Delegate project responsibility to my project manager, who can send me high-level updates.
Stepping away from financial reviews → Trust my commercial manager to complete detailed reviews and prepare monthly summaries.
No longer handling staff issues → My senior management team needs to be the first point of contact for each department.
Step 4: Take Action and Clear the Site
The last step is simple: start implementing your demolition plans.
Tackle one goal at a time.
In my experience, once business owners like Jim shift their focus from daily operations to value-building, they experience substantial growth.
Less time spent on operations equals more time for strategically building a high-value, sellable asset.
We create true wealth this way.
Good luck, and let’s make it a high-value year!
